The Rodriguez Police Station has provided round-the-clock security to the family of the 15-year-old boy who was accidentally shot by a police officer during a confrontation with victim’s brother on Sunday in Rodriguez, Rizal.

Lt. Col. Ruben Piquero, Rodriguez Police Station chief, told Manila Bulletin that police personnel have been deployed to provide security to the family of the fatality, John Francis Ompad, while the criminal and administrative proceedings are ongoing against the involved police officer, Cpl. Arnulfo Gabriel Sabillo.

Sabillo and his co-personnel at the Community Police Assistance Center 5 were relieved from their post and are now restricted at the Rodriguez Police Station.

Reports from the Rizal Police Provincial Office (PPO) showed that the shooting happened shortly after the victim’s older brother, John Ace, who was riding on a motorbike, evaded Sabillo when the latter reportedly tried to flag him down at Block 19 Phase 2, Southville 8B in Barangay San Isidro after midnight on August 20.

Police said the older Ompad sped off until he reached his residence. However, in his attempt to evade the police officer, he took off his helmet and threw it at Sabillo and the policeman’s civilian companion, prompting the cop to shoot the older Ompad. 

The bullet however hit the younger Ompad when he emerged from their house during the confrontation.

It was learned that the younger Ompad died a few hours later in the hospital.

Piquero said although there was indeed lapses on the part of Sabillo as he was not in uniform when he flagged down the older Ompad, his administrative liabilities are still the subject of an ongoing probe by the Provincial Internal Affairs Service of the Rizal PPO as a standard operating procedure of the Philippine National Police.

Homicide and attempted homicide charges were filed against the suspects earlier this week.

In a statement, the Rizal PPO said newly installed Rizal PPO officer-in-charge Col. Rainerio M. De Chavez has expressed sympathies to the bereaved family of Ompad and assured them of their assistance.

Earlier, erstwhile PPO director Col. Dominic Baccay had provided financial assistance to the Ompad family, according to Lt. Col. Piquero.   

The killing of Ompad was the second incident to happen this month after Jemboy Baltazar was shot and killed in Navotas also by a police officer.

It was learned that prior to becoming a police corporal on December 15, 2022, Sabillo had been involved in a few administrative complaints resulting in his suspension for a total of 50 days.
