Go urges DTI, other gov't agencies to strictly implement Consumer Act, stop proliferation of fake goods
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go on Friday, August 25 called on the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and other concerned agencies to ensure the full implementation of the Consumer Act and protect consumers against buying counterfeit products that have proliferated in the market.

Go made the call after the reported proliferation of scammers exploiting celebrity visuals for unregistered medicine endorsements.
“This issue regarding the proliferation of fake products in the market is already pending in the Senate Committee on Trade. And as a member of the committee, I will focus on this issue,” said Go, chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography.
Go has expressed his support to the “e-Botika” bill filed by Fourth District Rep. Ferjenel Biron, which seeks to regulate the operations of online pharmacies in the country.
For his part, Go said he is committed to pursue consumer protection through Senate Bill No. 1846 or the proposed Internet Transactions Act which also aims to combat the proliferation of fake products by protecting consumers and merchants engaged in e-commerce.
The bill also reflects a timely response to the global pandemic's impact on boosting online businesses nationwide, where the risk of encountering fake products has increased.
“The pandemic required us to explore new ways and more convenient options to do business. As we enter the new normal, online transactions have become a necessity, if not the new norm for all of us. This makes the issue of fake products even more pressing,” Go pointed out.
He said there is an urgent need to address concerns on fake products noting the vast coverage of e-commerce, including basic needs like food, drink and clothing.
But it is also equally important to protect small businesses and online sellers from this threat as it is crucial to the country's recovery.
“Let’s protect small business and online sellers who only want to earn a living for their family, especially during these times,” Go stressed.
“The proliferation of fake products undermines their efforts and is detrimental to the recovery of our country," he stressed.
