Members of Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Kamuning Police Station (PS 10) arrested on August 20, Sunday, a 40-year-old woman allegedly involved in illegal recruitment in Quezon City.
Police said the suspect, identified as Melight Marasigan, 40, a resident of Sitio Gitna, Barangay Dumantay, Batangas City, was nabbed in an entrapment operation.
QCPD authorities said in a report on Thursday, Aug. 24, that Marasigan was arrested at a fast food restaurant located at East Avenue corner Matalino St. in Barangay Central Quezon City at 1:28 p.m.
Investigation showed that on July 15, Marasigan introduced herself as a recruiter to Arlene Caballero, a lady guard at the Philippine Heart Center, and assured her that she can help her get a job as hotel manager in Canada. She also promised to arrange her transportation to the said country.
Marasigan demanded an amount of P190,000 from the victim, which she said will serve as a processing fee for the latter’s documents and other placement fees. Caballero promptly paid Marasigan.
On August 14, Caballero was informed by a certain Rulane Marcelo that Marasigan lacked accreditation to enlist and transport Filipino workers for employment abroad.
Caballero also found out that Marasigan had defrauded several victims who had received the same commitment from her.
Caballero, together with the other victims of Marasigan, reported the suspect's illegal activity to PS 10.
Fortunately, Marasigan demanded another P25,000 from Caballero. The amount she said, will cover Caballero’s Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS), medical and dental expenses, as well as a swab test.
This prompted to Caballero to report the incident to police authorities who promptly planned an entrapment operation against the suspect at a Quezon City fast food joint.
The suspect will be charged for violation of Republic Act 10022 or An Act Amending Republic Act 8042, otherwise known as the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995.
