A 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Oriental Mindoro early Thursday morning, Aug. 24, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the earthquake, which struck at 1:38 a.m., had its epicenter 12 kilometers (km) northwest of Bansud, Oriental Mindoro.

It occurred at a shallow depth of 1 km beneath the epicenter.

Phivolcs initially measured the quake’s magnitude at 5.3 but later revised it to 5.1.

It was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro and Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Bansud and Gloria in Oriental Mindoro.

Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the tremor at Intensity III in Calapan City and Roxas, in Oriental Mindoro; Intensity II in Boac in Marinduque, Victoria in Oriental Mindoro, and Gumaca in Quezon; and Intensity I in Lemery, San Luis and Batangas City in Batangas, Abra De Ilog and San Jose in Occidental Mindoro, Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro, and Mauban in Quezon.

It said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Phivolcs warned the public to be cautious as aftershocks may occur.
