Bohol province remains ASF-free

CEBU CITY – The province of Bohol remains African Swine Fever (ASF)-free.

The province was able to retain its “dark green zone” or ASF-free classification after it was able to contain the spread of the virus in Pilar town where several hogs were confirmed to have been infected with ASF.

Bohol’s ASF-free status was announced by Paul Limson, director of the Bureau of Animal Industry.

“It has been established that timely depopulation, thorough cleaning and disinfection, were implemented. Furthermore, active surveillance activities yielded negative results,” Limson said in his letter to Angel Enriquez, regional director of the Department of Agriculture-Central Visayas.

Although some hogs died due to ASF in Pilar, the province was still declared ASF-free after it was confirmed that no ASF-related deaths were recorded in other areas 15 days after some hogs died due to the virus in Barangay San Vicente, Pilar.

The absence of any confirmed cases in the affected farm and other barangays within 15 days showed that the spread of the virus was prevented, Limson said.

Bohol Gov. Aris Aumentado welcomed the declaration and vowed that strict biosecurity measures will be enforced to protect the P6-billion hog industry in the province.

“We are happy with this declaration and we will protect our hog industry all the more. We will continue to be vigilant and follow regulations to keep Bohol ASF-free,” Aumentado said.

The Office of the Provincial Veterinarian will spearhead the enforcement of protocols to safeguard the 48,000 hog raisers in the province from ASF.
