She graced the Moving Up Ceremony of elementary and junior high female students at the Manila City Jail where she urged them not to lose hope despite their circumstances.
The ceremony, held on Wednesday, Aug. 23, was attended by 166 junior high completers and 54 elementary graduates.
“Pinatunayan ng 166 Junior High completers at 54 Elementary graduates na hindi dahilan ang kanilang sitwasyon para mawalan ng pag-asa sa buhay at talikuran ang kanilang mga pangarap (The 166 junior high completers and 54 elementary graduates proved that their situations are not hindrances to lose hope in life and turn their backs on their dreams),” she wrote on Facebook.
“Hinimok ko silang patuloy lang na mamuhay nang may pag-asa sa buhay (I urged them to continue living with hope in life),” the official added.
Duterte also shared photos of the event, where she was seen handling the certificates and putting on the medals on the female students.
According to the Vice President, the students earned their merits under DepEd’s Alternative Learning System (ALS), a parallel learning system that provides opportunities for out-of-school youth and adult learners.
“Patunay ito na nakita nila ang kahalagahan ng edukasyon sa kanilang pagnanais na magbagong buhay (This is proof that they’ve seen the value of education in their desire to change their lives),” Duterte posted.
The official thanked the inmates for inviting her to be the guest speaker, as well as the officials of the Manila City Jail and the DepEd Manila Schools Division Office.
