House Deputy Majority Leader and TGP Party-list Rep. Jose “Bong” Teves Jr. declared Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 23 that he was now the "only Teves in Congress".
The House Committee on Appropriations was tackling the Department of Justice (DOJ) proposed budget for 2024 on Wednesday when Rep. Teves' name was called by the presiding chairman as the next interpellator.
By this time, it had become an inside joke among the House members to refer to the party-list lawmaker as "The good Teves".
When he turned on his microphone, the TGP solon uttered, "The good one and the only Teves now in Congress".
It was only last Aug. 17, when erstwhile Negros Oriental 3rd district congressman Arnolfo Teves Jr. was expelled from the House of Representatives via nominal vote result of 265-0-3 (yes-no-abstain).
"Mr. Chairman I have no question to the Department of Justice. I would like to acknowledge the excellent performance, and also I would like to take the opportunity to thank the good secretary [Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla] for the cleaning of my name in the case of former congressman Arnie Teves Jr.," Rep. Teves said.
"Alam naman po natin lahat na maraming Teves...dalawa po kaming Teves dito po sa Kongreso dati. Dati yun (We all know that there are a lot of Teveses...there were two of us in Congress before. That was before)," he added.
Ex-Rep. Teves has been considered absent without official leave by the House of Representatives since mid-March. His refusal to come back to the Philippines and report for duty had resulted in the Committee on Ethics and Privileges' expulsion recommendation against him.
He has been tagged as the mastermind in the March 4 assassination of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo.
Suffice it to say that Rep. Teves had been inconvenienced by him having the same surname as the Visayas solon.
Last March 15, the deputy majority leader said in a privilege speech: "As an innocent person, yours truly is not involved in the killing of Governor Degamo but unfortunately my name is being dragged into the issue, which misleads the public."
"Wala pong kinalaman o koneksyon ang aming pamilya mula sa probinsya ng Catanduanes, Bicol Region sa issue ng pagpaslang kay Governor Degamo ng Negros Oriental (My family from the province of Catanduanes, Bicol Region is neither involved nor connected to the killing of Governor Degamo from Negros Oriental),” he said
