PAGASA not ruling out possibility of LPA becoming tropical depression
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Wednesday, Aug. 23 said the low-pressure area (LPA) east of Cagayan has the potential to develop into a tropical depression.
Weather specialist Chenel Dominguez said PAGASA is not ruling out the possibility that the LPA, which is located 445 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan, will become a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.
Once it becomes a tropical depression, it will be given the local name “Goring,” Dominguez said.
In the next 24 hours, the trough of extension of the LPA may bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms to the Cagayan Valley and Cordillera Administrative Region.
Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms may also prevail over Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Bicol Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, and Visayas due to the southwest monsoon, or “habagat.”
PAGASA warned that flooding and landslides are possible during moderate to heavy rains.
Meanwhile, in the rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, hot and humid weather will persist due to partly cloudy to cloudy skies, but isolated and short-lived rain showers or thunderstorms are still possible in the afternoon or evening.
PAGASA also advised the public to be cautious of possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.
