Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople left an "indelible void" in the realm of public service, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Wednesday, Aug. 23, as the agency joined the nation in mourning her untimely passing.

"It is with profound sadness that the whole of the DOH and I extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late DMW Secretary Susan "Toots" Ople," Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said in a statement.
He said that her unwavering dedication to the well-being and empowerment of migrant workers, especially the healthcare workers abroad touched the lives of countless individuals and families, both within the country's borders and beyond.
Herbosa also mentioned that through Ople's leadership, she championed the rights and welfare of the country's migrant workers, ensuring that they were not only protected but also given opportunities to thrive.
"Our partnership on the OFW Hospital, as well as our close collaboration during the Covid-19 pandemic, are testament to our continuing work with DMW on the health of our migrant workers," he said.
"In these trying times, let us honor her memory by continuing the important work she started," he added.
Herbosa hopes that Ople's commitment to public service inspires the nation to put the needs of others before our own in pursuit of a more just and equitable society.
Ople passed away on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 22, the DWM confirmed. In a statement, the DMW said Ople was surrounded by her family and loved ones when she passed away at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
