Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard mourned the passing of Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople.

“I am deeply saddened by the sudden death of a dear friend and a hardworking public servant,” Gordon said in a statement on Wednesday, Aug. 23.
Gordon praised Ople for carrying on the work of her late father, Blas Ople, who spent 19 years as secretary and later minister of the Department of Labor and Employment, and for assisting overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
He pointed out that Ople, as president of the Ople Center Foundation in 2015, signed a memorandum of agreement with the PRC to assist OFWs.
Because of this agreement, OFWs and their families receive psychosocial support and can apply for Restoring Family Links assistance, he added.
Ople, who comes from a family of intelligent and hardworking public servants, was also described by Gordon as embodying a life of dedicated public service.
Gordon went on to say that Ople passionately championed people's causes because he knew she wanted to make a difference, particularly for OFWs, such as the implementation of the digital pass known as the "OFW Pass"—an alternative to the Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC).
The PRC chief said that it was difficult to build a new department from nothing when Ople pushed on and made impactful changes despite the difficult challenges that come with advancing the interests of OFWs.
“Toots lived her life in a way that honored Ka Blas—always working for the best interest of Filipinos, Kate and I extend our deepest condolences to her family.”
“We pray that her soul rests in peace, as she gave her life for the Filipinos,” he added.
Gordon hoped that Ople's successors would do better because they owed it to her to advocate for the protection of our OFWs and to ensure that other countries did the same. (Rhowen Del Rosario)
