DMW, BBF recognize Pinoy migrant workers for improving Filipino image

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Bagong Bayani Foundation (BBF) recognized on Wednesday, Aug. 23, several overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) for their contribution in promoting the image of Filipino as a competent, responsible, and dignified worker.

The awarding ceremony for the Bagong Bayani Awards (BBA) was spearheaded by BBF also to recognize and pay tribute to our OFWs for their significant efforts in fostering goodwill among peoples of the world and in greatly contributing to the socio-economic development of their communities and the Philippines.

It was held at the Philippine International Convention Center on Wednesday. 

The Bagong Bayani Award for Outstanding Employee was awarded to Second Officer Karl Japeth G. Rosal and Arthur Dolosa Buban for their competence by being promoted in ranks and received recognition for distinguished and outstanding performance in their duties and responsibilities.

Rosal, the youngest amongst all the awardees, used social media as a platform to establish the Seafarer’s Notebook. This is an active online platform that offers information and assistance on tips for seafarers. 

On the other hand, Buban, an OFW in Hong Kong founded an association in Hong Kong to help fellow land-based OFWs and their families. 

Buban also bagged the highest award which is the Blas F. Ople Award para sa Natatanging Bayani.

The Bagong Bayani Award for Community and Social Service was awarded to Jose Apuyan Kosca and Arlene Celo Navarro, both were recognized for their kindness in helping fellow Filipinos overseas. 

Kosca helped stranded employees and their families by providing necessary commodities such as food and medicine during the pandemic, and managed to spearhead fundraising to give food assistance and training to the less fortunate in Abu Dhabi. 

Kosca is also part of the 300 most influential Filipinos in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Meanwhile, Navarro provided quality nursing care working overseas and also spearheaded fundraising and other advocacies. She pioneered the foundation that caters to the healthcare needs of the citizens that live in the far-flung area of Saudi Arabia.

Navarro was also a recipient of the Hero of the Year in the Middle East.

Other recipients of the Community and Social Service Awards are the 22 crew members of the MV Iraklis and 19 Filipino Officers and Crew of MV Fleur N. Both crew teams showed bravery and outstanding performance in their duties as seafarers.

On the other hand, the recipient of the Capt. Gregorio S. Oca Achievement Award is Teodoro Boaloy Quijano. This special award is given to any individual who made a significant contribution to the development of the Philippines’ shipping and seafaring industry.

Since 1989, the BBA has recognized 1,665 outstanding OFWs, who set examples for the OFW communities to emulate and bring pride and honor to the Filipino nation. (Nicole Magmanlac)
