The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has confirmed that veteran broadcaster Jay Sonza was released from prison on Tuesday night, Aug. 22.
In a message, BJMP spokesperson Jayrex Bustinera said the release stemmed from the provisional dismissal of the syndicated estafa and large-scale illegal recruitment charges by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 100.
Based on the Section 8, Rule 117, Rules on Criminal Procedure, a criminal case is provisionally dismissed when the accused expressly consents and the offended party is notified of such a dismissal.
Bustinera noted that the BJMP also received the release order from the same court for the 11 counts of estafa after Sonza posted bail.
He added that the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 215 ordered Sonza’s release after his illegal recruitment case was provisionally dismissed.
Sonza also posted bail for his libel case being handled by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 77.
“All with release orders. BJMP also conducted verification of other cases, no pending cases found,’’ Bustinera pointed out.
Reports disclosed that Sonza was about to leave the country for Hong Kong on July 18 when he was stopped by the Bureau of Immigration and Deportation (BID) personnel at the airport and was turned over to the NBI Airport Investigation Division for the serving of the arrest warrant.
