Number coding still in effect on Aug. 25 FIBA opening, MMDA advises motorists

The number coding scheme in Metro Manila will still be in effect on the first day of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup 2023 on Friday, Aug. 25, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.

MMDA chairman Don Artes said the decision is part of the support system to the national government’s objective in ensuring the success of the Philippine hosting of the international event.

“We will not declare suspension of number coding on August 25 despite the suspension of work and classes in Metro Manila on that day,” said Artes in a press briefing on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

“The reason is that based on our experience, the volume of vehicles in Metro Manila increases if the number coding is suspended which eventually creates traffic congestion,” he added.

President Marcos declared the suspension of work in Metro Manila and Bulacan on Aug. 25 for the opening of the FIBA World Cup.

As part of the preparations for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, Artes said the MMDA has set up a multi-agency command center (MACC) to give way to a faster and more coordinated traffic management response.

Road works (reblocking, utility works, pipe laying, road upgrading, excavation works) in Metro Manila are temporarily suspended effective midnight of Aug. 17 up to midnight of Sept. 10 .

The conduct of mall-wide sales was also prohibited in malls along EDSA and other areas affected by the FIBA World Cup 2023.

“This is to ensure that all affected roads will remain passable, clean, safe, and serviceable to all types of vehicles and pedestrians during the said period,” said Artes.

Another measure that will be implemented, according to Artes, is the Stop-and-Go scheme wherein the flow of vehicles would be temporarily stop to give way to the passing convoy of delegates to the FIBA World Cup.
