Malabon gov't to continue efforts on TB elimination- Mayor Sandoval

Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval has vowed to continue the city government’s efforts in eliminating tuberculosis (TB) in the city.

Sandoval made the vow after the city government was recognized by the Department of Health (DOH) for its efforts in the campaign against TB and in assisting patients during the Race to End TB 2023 Annual Awards held last Aug. 15.

According to the DOH, the event aimed to recognize local government units for their efforts and as well as inspire other stakeholders in intensifying strategies to achieve a TB-free country.

It has five tuberculosis outcome indicators, including Treatment coverage rate, Population testing rate, Bacteriologically-confirmed treatment enrollment rate, Drug-resistant treatment success rate, and TB preventive treatment (TPT) enrollment.

The DOH conferred the “Gold Award” for Treatment Coverage Rate category  and the “Silver Award” for Drug Resistant TB Treatment Success Rate category to the local government for its excellent initiatives in reaching out, providing aid, and treating TB patients in the city.

Sandoval thanked the DOH for the recognition and the City Department Health for leading the TB elimination efforts in the city.

“Katuwang natin sa tagumpay na ito ang kabuuan ng ating City Health Department, ang ating mga doctor, nurses, at lahat ng mga healthcare workers na walang-sawang ibinubuhos ang lahat para sa kampanya laban sa pagkalat ng TB sa ating lungsod (Our partner in this success are the City Health Department, our doctors, nurses, and all the healthcare workers who are tirelessly doing everything for the campaign against the spread of TB in our city)," she said in a Facebook post.

“Asahan po ninyo ang aming patuloy na dedikasyon at pagpupursigi na makamit ang ating pangarap na TB-Free Malabon (Please expect our continued dedication and perseverance to achieve our dream of TB-Free Malabon),” the mayor added.

The city government said that it conducts programs for active TB case findings such as free mobile chest x-ray and rapid diagnostic tests for the residents.

It also follows the FAST (Finding TB Cases Actively, Separating Safely, and Treating Effectively) plus strategy which promotes early diagnosis of individuals at risk of the disease and effective treatment to patients to prevent the spread of TB.

The local government said that it also provides medicines to TB patients and refers them to the City Social Welfare Department for financial help when needed.

The City Health Department also encouraged residents who experience symptoms (coughing, chest pain, fever, etc.) to undergo consultation and get treated.
