Davao Oriental renames welcome park in honor of Malanyaon


DAVAO CITY – The provincial government renamed on August 22, Tuesday, the welcome park at the border of Davao Oriental in Banaybanay to Gov. Corazon Nuñez-Malanyaon Welcome Park.

According to the Davao Oriental provincial government, renaming the welcome park is a tribute to the former governor who would have turned 74 on August 22.

Present during the unveiling of the marker and signpost is Luis, the late governor's husband, Davao Oriental Gov. Niño Sotero Uy, and Mati City Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat.

Malanyaon passed away on June 28 at the age of 73. Cause of death was not revealed and Malanyaon was laid to rest at the Davao Memorial Park here on July 7.

Malanyaon was Davao Oriental’s inaugural district representative from 2001-2007 and again from 2016-2022. She was governor from 2007 to 2016 and 2022.

Her political journey commenced with her appointment as office-in-charge councilor of Davao City from 1986 to 1987.

She was leading Davao City councilor from 1988 to 1992. Recognized for her insistent determination in politics, efforts to boost tourism, and implementation of various infrastructure projects, she played a pivotal role in advancing Davao Oriental.

Born on August 22, 1949 and a Certified Public Accountant and lawyer, Malanyaon grew up in Cateel before pursuing her higher education at Ateneo de Davao University. 

She was supposed to lead the 56th commemoration of the province's founding on July 1 when she passed away.

Malanyaon was fondly remembered by friends and colleagues as a compassionate leader with a genuine dedication to public service.
