Veteran Manila Bulletin reporter Mario Casayuran passed away on Monday, August 21, 2023. He was 83.
Casayuran started his career as a journalist with the Manila Bulletin in the early 1970s, covering the police beat before being transferred to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
But it was at the Senate that Casayuran made his mark, covering the beat from its original site at the historic Senate Building (not National Museum of the Philippines) on P. Burgos St. in Manila since the early 1980s to its present site at the GSIS Building in Pasay City.
At the time of his demise, he was still covering the Senate beat in tandem with MB senior reporter Hannah Torregoza.
He was highly regarded by the country’s senators as one of the icons in Senate journalism.
Casayuran holds the distinction of having had covered generations of senators, particularly the late former Senate President Edgardo Angara and his son incumbent Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara; former President Joseph Estrada, who was senator from 1987 to 1992, and his sons – incumbent Senators Jinggoy Estrada and JV Ejercito.
Casayuran also covered the Cayetano family -- the late Senator Renato Cayetano and his children – current Senators Pia and Alan Peter Cayetano; the Pimentels (former Senate President Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr. and his son Koko); and former Senator Ramon Revilla and his son incumbent Senator Ramon Revilla Jr.
Known among his Senate peers as ‘Mang Mario’, Casayuran cast a fatherly presence at the Senate Press Office, and was always open to help younger journalists learn the ropes of covering the Upper Chamber.
Casayuran is survived by his wife Josie, his sons Alexis and Baron, his daughters-in-law, and grandchildren.
