Liberal Party (LP) President and Albay 1st district Rep. Edcel Lagman reminded Filipinos on Monday, Aug. 21 about the historical significance of the death of Senator Ninoy Aquino, 40 years after it happened.
According to Lagman, Senator Aquino's assassination on Aug. 21, 1983 at the tarmac of the then Manila International Airport (later renamed Ninoy Aquino International Airport) "accelerated the liberation of the Philippines from authoritarian ignominy".
"His heroism galvanized the beginning of the end of the strongman rule of Ferdinand Marcos," said the Albay congressman and former House minority leader.
"Ninoy Aqunio’s death was the shining beacon that lighted the path at EDSA culminating in the people’s overthrow of the dictator Marcos," he added, referring to the 1986 peaceful revolution that made news the world over.
"The People Power Revolution of 1986 toppling the Marcos dictatorship was one of our finest moments epitomizing the strength and courage of the Filipino spirit and our steadfast determination to end tyranny, brutality, and corruption," Lagman said.
The independent minority congressman further said that Senator Aquino's death "gave Filipinos courage".
"The assassination of Ninoy Aquino truly changed the course of Philippine history. It ignited widespread outrage and triggered national protests against the corrupt, despotic, and oppressive regime of Marcos.
"It gave birth to widespread and unwavering public outcry, civil and political protests, and stirred the people’s longstanding discontent and heightened their sense of disenfranchisement," Lagman said.
Senator Aqunio’s wife, the late Corazon "Cory" Aqunio, replaced the deposed Ferdinand Marcos Sr. following the People Power Revolution.
Senator Aquino and President Aquino were the parents of the late former president Benigno S. Aquino III, who served in Malacañang from 2010 to 2016.
