The development of countries lies not chiefly on humanitarian assistance, but on coming up with preventive measures so that societies and communities could thrive during humanitarian crisis, the United Nations (UN) Philippines chief said during the World Humanitarian Day on Saturday, Aug. 19.

UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator Gustavo Gonzalez shared his message for the commemoration of humanitarian works via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“Every #WorldHumanitarianDay we recall that solutions to humanitarian crises is not more humanitarian assistance but more prevention, which is a fundamental #development function,” he wrote.
“We thank again the committed humanitarian community for their inspiring invaluable work,” he added.
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also shared “a meaningful message” from Gonzalez on X “about dedication and recognizes the efforts of humanitarian workers who are serving the people.”
“Protecting and saving lives remains the fundamental reason for humanitarian work, which means preserving hope no matter where, no matter who,#NoMatterWhat,” the UN Philippines chief was quoted as saying.
The World Humanitarian Day is commemorated every year to recognize humanitarian personnel and those who lost their lives for humanitarian causes.
According to the UN’s website, the 2023 celebration marks the 20th anniversary of the attack on UN headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq.
“Humanitarians have no other purpose than to save and protect lives and deliver the basic necessities of life, they stand shoulder to shoulder with the communities they serve and bring hope,” the UN said.
“No matter the danger or the hardship, humanitarians venture deep into disaster-stricken regions and on the front lines of conflict, strive to save and protect people in need,” it added.
In a video message posted by UN Philippines on X and featuring Gonzalez, the official acknowledged the “critical support” of the Women Peace and Humanitarian Fund in Bangsamoro Region.
“As a UN representative, I’m definitely very proud of the achievement of the women peace and humanitarian front in the country by empowering an important number of civil society organizations and community associations and localizing peace-building investment,” he said.
“And, as you know, 20 donor countries are presently supporting the women’s peace and humanitarian front which is in fact a massive demonstration of partnerships and trust in our work,” he added.
