Funeral mass for victims of Laguna Lake tragedy held in Talim Island

Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos officiated in the funeral mass for some of the fatalities of the Binangonan boat sinking incident in Binangonan on Tuesday, August 1.

Bishop Santos led the requiem mass at Santo Domingo Parish Church in Barangay Janosa, Talim Island, Binangonan for some of the victims who are mostly from the island’s six villages such as Janosa, Buhangin, Kaytome, Gulod, Sapang, and Ginoong Sanay.

Binangonan’s Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) said 27 were listed as fatalities in the sinking of MB Aya Express, a passenger boat, while on its way to Talim Island last July 27.

At least 41 were rescued by local fishermen from nearby villages who were the first responders at the site of the accident off the shore of Talim Island.

On July 31, Santos also held a memorial mass for the victims of the Laguna Lake tragedy at the International Shrine of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage in Antipolo City.

The Rizal Police Provincial Office said five persons are now facing criminal charges for what the Binangonan Municipal Government considers as the town’s worst lake tragedy.

The office of Mayor Cesar Ynares, the provincial government led by Governor Nina Ynares, and the regional offices of the national government agencies have extended assistance to the families of the victims.
