Borongan diocese to lead prayer walk against mining

Diocese of Borongan Bishop Crispin Varquez said the Jericho Walk prayer rally seeks to urge the local government to set aside applications for mining for the benefit of the people of Samar as well as to help preserve the environment. “Let us not be blind to the current horrific effects of mining operation on our main islands, islets, radically scarring landscapes and seascapes,” said Bishop Varquez over Radio Veritas. A Jericho march or walk is a prayer walk by a group or congregation. The purpose is to pray for or against something and ask God to intercede, protect or change something. “I appeal to the DENR {Department of Environment and Natural Resources] and the MGB {Mines and Geosciences Bureau] to please cancel all mining permits being used by mining companies operating in our areas,” said Bishop Varquez. The Jericho Walk will start as a caravan from the different parishes towards the Eastern Samar Provincial capitol. It will be followed by the prayer walk at 9:30 a.m. towards the Cathedral Parish of the Nativity of Our Lady (Borongan Cathedral) for the Holy Mass which will be officiated by Bishop Varquez. Representatives from the Dioceses of Calbayog and Catarman are also expected to attend the gathering. Bishop Varquez, who is pushing for agri-ecological tourism in the island, earlier, expressed his concern over the mining operations in Homonhon and Manicani Islands in Eastern Samar.
