President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. will meet Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during the latter's visit to Manila in September.
Albanese will be visiting the country from September 7 to 8.
According to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), the official's visit will be the first visit by an Australian Prime Minister since 2003.
It follows a series of high-level engagements earlier this year between the Philippines and Australia, underscoring the shared commitment of both nations to advance the trajectory of their multifaceted partnership, the PCO added.
The President’s meeting with the Prime Minister Albanese is expected to reinforce the two countries' partnership, ushering in a new era of closer cooperation across key sectors, such as defense and security, trade, economic development, and maritime affairs.
The bilateral relations between Australia and the Philippines commenced with the opening of Australia’s first Consulate General in Manila in May 1946.
The Philippines is one of Australia’s longest-standing bilateral relationships.
Both countries have shared interests and values, supported by strong people-to-people links. Australia is home to over 250,000 people of Filipino heritage, with over 10,000 Filipino students enrolled in Australian universities and vocational institutions.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong visited the country last May upon the invitation of Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo.
They discussed a broad range of issues of mutual interest, including defense and security partnership, development cooperation, trade and investment, and people-to-people ties.
