Marc Jacob's latest collaboration line presents sustainable footwear pieces

The limited-edition footwear collection is made from recyclable plastic and Biobased EVA

Sustainability is no longer a trend in fashion. These days, fashion schools are taking the step to educate future industry movers to explore and find ways to design pieces with it at the core. Likewise, fashion brands are also bringing the sense of sustainable fashion closer to people by producing collections that focus on using recyclable materials and other innovations. A testament to that is Brazilian footwear brand Melissa’s latest collaboration line.

Following the success of its past partnership with renowned fashion designers and houses, the brand unveils its newest tie-up with Marc Jacobs. What makes this collection stand out among its past collaborations is its highlight on sustainability. That is highlighted into three three designs, with colors inspired by Marc Jacobs' ready-to-wear collection.

First is the Clog. Don’t be fooled by its chunky appearance, the Clog pair is a light and comfortable piece that can elevate one’s casual dressing game. It is crafted using a mono-material made of Biobased ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA).

“This lower-impact material is partially derived from sugarcane with at least 25 percent of vegetable origin content certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA),” the brand says. “In addition to being environmentally friendly, the plant-derived compound is light and comfortable, bringing comfort to everyday life. Moreover, the silver-colored models use water-based ink, which does not contain volatile organic compounds that are known to be partly responsible for air pollution.”

Next is the Becky, a pair that is perfect for anyone who wants to capture the charm of Y2K style. It features Melflex, Melissa's 100 percent recyclable plastic. Its soles feature Marc Jacobs’ monogram, and are filled with ultralight polyurethane (PU). While the insole is covered with fabric made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.

Melissa Slide + Marc Jacobs

Last is the Slide. Melissa’s well-loved easy slip-on style is developed using Melflex and features a sole made of 100 percent Biobased EVA, resulting in an ultra-comfortable shoe perfect for both men and women.

“With the constantly evolving sustainable sphere, Melissa has been investing by using biomaterials and recycled materials, with carbon reduction in the production chain,” the brand says. In addition to that, Melissa notes that its accessories are vegan, registered by the Vegan Society, and contain an average of 30 percent pre-consumer recycled polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which takes advantage of waste materials that would be discarded in a standard production process. Adding to its sustainability initiative is the brand’s packaging, which is recyclable and uses 63 percent recycled paper and water-based glue.
