2 remaining suspects in college teacher's slay in Negros nabbed

BACOLOD CITY – Police have arrested the two remaining suspects in the murder of a college teacher in Barangay San Pedro, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental.

Police Major Randy Babor, Binalbagan police chief, said they arrested the second suspect identified as Jan Paolo Fernandez, 21, of Barangay San Teodoro on Thursday, August 17.

Fernandez was apprehended a day after 19-year-old John Rey Castino was arrested in Barangay San Teodoro, hours after the victim 51-year-old Tony Lazaga was robbed and stabbed to death by three suspects on Wednesday, August 16.

Babor said that Fernandez sent surrender feelers to his family, paving the way for police to trace his whereabouts.

Fernandez attempted to escape on board his motorcycle, when he saw his family being accompanied by the police when they went to Barangay Tinongan, Isabela, Negros Occidental, according to Babor.

A brief chase followed until he was cornered, Babor said.

However, Babor said that Fernandez denied that he stabbed the victim.

Two days after the incident, Mayor Alejandro Mirasol, in a Facebook post, announced that the third suspect identified as Jonathan Santella surrendered to the police, through the help of Moises Padilla Vice Mayor Ian Villaflor on Friday, August 18.

Castino said they stabbed the victim after he resisted when they robbed him.

Lazaga sustained 16 stab wounds and the victim’s cellular phone and cash were missing.

Castino was arrested in his residence in Barangay San Teodoro after he was captured in a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage and was identified by some witnesses.

Robbery with homicide charges will be filed against the suspects.

Mirasol said that he is ordering the barangay and town police to conduct  a night patrol around the town proper.

He also asked people in the town, especially students and minors, to refrain from leaving their houses at night until the wee hours, and observe the ongoing curfew.
