TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Rain or Shine finally woke up from deep slumber and picked up its first win in the 2023 William Jones Cup after a 98-90 double overtime thriller against Iran at the Taipei Heping Gymnasium on Wednesday, Aug 16.

The Elasto Painters finally ended a four-game dry spell behind the heroics of Ange Kouame and Anton Asistio.
Asistio showed steely nerves and drained a booming triple with 1:17 left in the second overtime to give the Elasto Painters a 93-88 lead and help them avert another fourth quarter collapse.
Gabe Norwood was reinserted for defensive purposes then completed a stop before Asistio found Kouame underneath to seal the deal for Rain or Shine.
Kouame, who kept ROS afloat in the extra period after squandering a 14-point lead in the final five minutes of regulation, finished with 20 points – 14 of which he dropped in the two OT periods – to go along with nine rebounds and nine blocks.
Asistio, on the other hand, had 10 points built on three triples on top of his five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Andrei Caracut added 19 points while Santi Santillan chalked up 17 as the two spearheaded the strong start Rain or Shine had been looking for in the first four games.
"Pahirapan 'yung panalo lamang na nung fourth quarter pero naubos yung lamang natin," said head coach Yeng Guiao after the game.
"Lessons learned lang at least yung mga batang players naiintindihan nila. Kung ano yung kailangan para manalo," he added.
The Filipinos established a double-digit spread in the first half, 38-25, and kept themselves in control despite the repeated rallies from the Iranians.
Rain or Shine even looked to be on its way to first win when it built a 72-58 lead in the fourth before disaster threatened to strike anew.
The Iranians refused to go down without a fight and unleashed a blistering 16-2 run to end the regulation and force the extra periods.
Amir Azari paced Iran with 16 points while Amir Yazarloo and Ali Reza Sharifi added 15 apiece
Rain or Shine goes for a back-to-back wins when it faces Anyang KGC on Thursday, Aug. 17, before taking a break the next day.
