DSWD, WFP lead 1st nutrition education session for food stamp beneficiaries

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) partnered with the World Food Program to provide nutrition education to the food stamp program’s (FSP) pilot 50 beneficiaries, who attended their first session on Wednesday, Aug. 16.

DSWD Undersecretary for Innovations Eduardo Punay said one of the requirements for FSP beneficiaries to receive their monthly P3000 food credit is attendance at the nutrition education sessions.

“The nutrition education is a crucial component of the food stamp program because we will teach our beneficiaries how to cook delicious, cheap, and nutritious food,” Punay said in Filipino during the event held in Tondo, Manila.

He said the beneficiaries are also required to attend job fairs hosted by the Department of Labor and Employment and skills training conducted by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

“The requirements are that they must attend regularly for their grant to continue because if they miss twice, the issuance of their grant will be suspended,” Punay added.

After the activity, the beneficiaries used the knowledge they had learned during the learning session to buy nourishing food from the “Kadiwa ng Pangulo” stalls.

Punay said the DSWD is on schedule to expand the FSP implementation by October.

“This month, we are setting another kick off in Caraga, specifically in Siargao. We will have another set of 50 beneficiaries by the end of August,” he said.

The FSP is one of the priority programs of the DSWD that aims to fight involuntary hunger by providing food augmentation to the bottom 1 million households based on Listahanan 3, who belong to the food-poor criteria as defined by the Philippine Statistics Authority.

It also included pregnant women and nursing mothers in the program.
