Responding fire truck leaves 1 dead, 8 injured in Tondo


A 62-year-old woman died while eight others were injured after they were accidentally hit by a responding fire truck in Tondo, Manila, on Monday afternoon, Aug. 14.

The Manila Police District (MPD)-Vehicular Traffic Investigation Section-Manila District Traffic Enforcement Unit (VTIS-MDTEU) identified the deceased victim as Violita Estabillo, 62.

She was pronounced dead at 4:05 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at Jose Reyes Hospital. 

The eight injured victims were identified as Irene Ang, 67; Reynaldo Caspe, 61; Katrina Quilang, 8; Harem Yap, 21; Gabriel Yap, 14; Audrey May Bautista, 16; Josh Guarin, 20; and Jocelyn Acosta, 52  .

The authorities said the eight residents sustained wounds and fractures and were rushed to the Mary Johnston Hospital and Jose Reyes Hospital.

Based on the police investigation, the fire truck was traveling westward to Padre Herrera Street in Tondo to respond to a residential fire on Ilaya Street in Tondo at 5:30 p.m.

Police said the fire truck driver turned the steering wheel to the right to avoid hitting the tent installed on Albuquerque Street.

He did not notice the victims standing on the side of the road.

Due to the strong impact, the victims were thrown into the ground.

Police identified the driver of the responding fire truck as Rodolfo Pineda, 27, a resident of Balut, Tondo, Manila.

He is currently being held under police custody and is facing charges for Reckless Imprudence Resulting to Homicide, Physical Injuries, and Damage to Property.
