Go and tell him his fault

Gird your loins

One of the things that plague most communities is the inability to handle confrontation, disagreement, and the mutual accountability when it comes to sin. Community living is very much part of human existence. A Christian formed in the ways of Jesus acknowledges his responsibility to care for the other. One also takes accountability for one’s actions and failures. In this communal living, the Gospel proposes a Christian way of dealing with internal conflicts and with members who erred. The Church includes the task of correcting the one who errs in its spiritual works of mercy. Awareness of Jesus’ presence in the community makes the task an act of charity rather than condemnation. The goal of the process is not to put the offender on trial, but to persuade him or her to see the wrong and to be reconciled. Jesus’ presence in the community is felt when community members care for one another and admonish any offending member in the spirit of dialogue, love, and forgiveness.
 

Gospel • Matthew 18:15-20
Jesus said to his disciples: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell the Church. If he refuses to listen even to the Church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
