ILOILO CITY – A New People’s Army (NPA) amazon was killed in an encounter with the Philippine Army in Barangay Cananaman, Leon town, Iloilo province on Sunday, August 13.
The 61st Infantry Battalion (IB) identified the slain rebel as Rebecca Aliparo, alias “Mara.”
Lt. Col. Arturo Balgos Jr., acting 61st IB commander, said soldiers were deployed to the area after residents reported extortion activities of the NPA.
Troops encountered Aliparo and killed her in a brief exchange of gunfire, prompting her two comrades to withdraw.
A native of Tigbauan town, Iloilo, Aliparo was said to be the political instructor and finance officer of the NPA Southern Front Committee in Panay Island.
The Army recovered a .45 caliber pistol, two caliber .45 magazines, 14 caliber .45 rounds, two pistol bandoliers, and subversive documents.
Balgos called on NPA rebels in southern and central Iloilo to surrender following Aliparo's death.
