Simply put, Filipinos were duped by the promise of lowered fuel prices by the Oil Industry Deregulation Act.
Thus, said House Deputy Majority Leader and ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo in his privilege speech Monday night, Aug. 14 wherein he promised to put a stop to the hardships being caused to Filipinos by the law.
Case in point is the new round of pump fuel price hikes reaching up to P1 per liter starting Tuesday morning, Aug. 15.
Tulfo noted that it was just last week when local oil companies imposed a hefty P4 per liter price increase on fuel products.
He faults the Republic Act (RA) No.8479 or the Downstream Oil Industry Deregulation Act of 1998 for these runaway price hikes. Tulfo called RA No.8479 as a "useless law" that should have been junked years ago.
(The public was deceived--or hoodwink--into believing that oil companies would race each other in reducing prices once government ni longer has a say in the pricing of petroleum products.)
(Instead of giving Filipinos relief, it has caused them inconvenience and an additional budget, especially to our poor country...it's time to junk this law.)
Tulfo said he would be filing with his fellow ACT-CIS solons a bill calling for the repeal of RA No.8479.
Enacted on Feb. 10, 1998, the law was supposed to liberalize and regulate the downstream oil industry in order to ensure a truly competitive market under a regime of fair prices, adequate and continuous supply of environmentally-clean and high-quality petroleum products.
