Abalos assures continuity of gov't service for local residents amid Makati-Taguig turf row

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos said he is continuously facilitating the continuity of service in the schools that are located in the areas that are subject of the boundary dispute between Makati City and Taguig City.

In a press briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Monday, Aug. 14, Abalos disclosed that he had a talk with both Makati City Mayor Abby Binay and Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano to discuss the issues that may affect the delivery of service to the people, particularly in terms of medical and education services.

“Mayor Binay said that she already discussed with Mayor Lani with reference to the schools. This is important because there are only a few days left before the school opening.

He said that the two local chief executives are continuously figuring out the ways to ensure that delivery of public service is continuous.

 “The Supreme Court decision should not affect the schools… What is important is that the children would be able to continue their study undisturbed, as to who owns them and who would pay for anything, it is better that they (Binay and Cayetano) just talk about it,” said Abalos.

On Monday, Cayetano led the “Brigada Eskwela” in the schools across the so-called EMBO (Enlisted Men’s Barrio) barangays where she was welcomed officials of the local Department of Education (DepEd) office, school principals, teachers, students, parents, and volunteers.

During the activity, Cayetano committed to supporting the schools in EMBO barangays in their opening school year.

The activity started at the Makati Science High School and at the Comembo Elementary School, Rizal Elementary School, Pembo Elementary School, Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino High School, Tibagan High School, Fort Bonifacio Elementary School, Fort Bonifacio High School, Pitogo Elementary School, Pitogo High School, Cembo Elementary School, East Rembo Elementary School, West Rembo Elementary School and South Cembo Elementary School 

“I am appealing to the General Parents Teachers Association officers and members for understanding and patience as the transition takes place, and vowed to work closely with the school heads and division officials to address the urgent concerns of teachers and students,” said Cayetano. 

She added that the Taguig Government has already prepared school kits which will be distributed to the students soon.

Cayetano also expressed gratitude to the Philippine National Police for not tolerating the action of the barangay captain who asked his constituents to block roads leading to the schools, and for ordering the immediate removal of the barricades, which would have only disrupted the important event.

Abalos, for his part, assured the affected local residents that the DILG would ensure that all the government services will not be affected by the issues as a result of the SC decision.
