Soldier killed, 7 wounded in Basilan ambush

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A soldier was killed and a policeman and six other government troopers were wounded in an ambush by armed men in Ungkaya Pukan, Basilan on Saturday, August 12.

A report from the Western Mindanao Command said that 10 unidentified armed men ambushed a convoy led by Ungkaya Pukan Vice Mayor Ahmadin Baharim at 3:45 p.m. in Barangay Ulitan.

The convoy, composed of the Alpha Company of the 64th Infantry Battalion, the group of Baharim, and Philippine National Police members of the Joint Peace and Security Team, was travelling on board two KM450 military trucks and two civilian vehicles when around 10 armed men fired their guns toward the group.

The soldiers fought back, resulting in a five-minute firefight. A soldier was killed while six other government troopers and a policeman were wounded.

The group of Baharim was said to be on their way to conduct an inspection in Barangay Ulitan of an upcoming outreach program on August 18.

In a statement, the Western Mindanao Command condemned the incident, calling it a “clear manifestation of the perpetrators’ disrespect to their local government officials, the military, and their fellow Basileños.”

“We will not stop until these heartless individuals are identified and neutralized.”
