We are glad for Samsung’s commitment to reshape the smartphone landscape. Foldable devices are interesting and offer plenty of new grounds for innovation and style.
We’ve been testing out the new Galaxy Z Fold5 and comparing it to last year’s Fold4, there’s a myriad of quality-of-life improvements that refine the device for a much sleeker look and experience.
This year Samsung introduces the Flex Hinge, which boils down to improved folding. Previous Fold5 devices have a tiny gap whenever it’s folded. This year’s smartphone though, folds totally flat, and yes, it looks a little less awkward and much nicer to look at.
The Fold5’s folding feature feels snappy and solid. It’s thinner than last year’s model, though if you’re not overly critical over such things, then you’ll barely notice it at all.
We’re not surprised with the Fold 5’s raw power. Samsung has always given it the “The Year’s Top Processor” which in this case, is the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Yes, it can pretty much handle anything you throw at it. The 12GB RAM lets the Fold5 blaze through anything Game at ease, friends.
Of course, besides a device to impress people with, the Fold5 is designed for multitasking. Last year’s Fold4, you can open up to three apps and spread them out in the unfolded screen. Samsung levels that up with up to four apps, making it easier to drag and drop, copy-paste, and provides a more seamless mini-workspace for you.
The 4400mAh battery, from my experience, was enough to last through the day. I’ve never been much of a power user, but I did get to spend a couple of hours gaming and browsing. On a single night, I was able to catch up to four episodes of “The Revenant” over the weekend. I still had well over 50% and I felt confident I could finish the entire season and still have enough to run to the nearest power outlet.
The rear camera has 50MP, 10MP, and 12MP. Of course Samsung will go through several lengths to make sure one of their flagship devices is more than capable of capturing highly impressive and very vibrant images. So there’s not much surprise there. It is, however, a joy to edit images with the Fold5 especially with an S-Pen.
If you haven’t picked up a Galaxy Z Fold device yet but are interested in owning one, then the Fold5 is an excellent entry point.
