Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Richard Bachmann and Sen. Francis Tolentino will spearhead the opening ceremony of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Games Visayas Regional Qualifying leg on Sunday, Aug. 13, in Iloilo City.
Commission on Higher Education (CHED) chairman Prospero de Vera, Department of National Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro and General Romeo S. Brawner Jr. of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are also expected to grace the ceremony.
The multisport event – a first in the country – is dedicated for cadets in the Philippine Reserve Officers’ Training Corps who also seek to become members of the national team.
“Ang 2023 Philippine ROTC Games ay hudyat ng pagsisimula ng paghahanap para sa kabataang Pilipinong atleta na hindi lamang mahusay sa palakasan kundi higit sa lahat, ipakita sa mundo na ang Pilipino ay may pusong kampeon,” said Tolentino.
De Vera, meanwhile, added that the event would help hone the skills of the youth in practicing discipline, as well as show them the importance of sports.
The Visayas leg kicks off on Sunday, Aug. 13, and will be followed by the Mindanao leg on Aug. 27 in Zamboanga. The Southern Luzon leg will be held in Cavite on Sept. 23 to 27.
The finals for all qualified athletes in each leg will compete in Pasig and Manila with no definite date as of now.
More than 500 cadets confirmed their participation in sports that include basketball, volleyball, esports, boxing, kickboxing, weightlifting, target shooting, swimming and demo sport arnis.
