Personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) have inspected the electric posts and removed dangling and deadly wires in the various areas in Pasig City to ensure public safety following the incident in Binondo, Manila recently.
Pasig City Fire Marshal Supt. Elaine Baylon-Evangelista noted that the combined efforts with the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) and the city Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office were done in the aftermath of the Aug. 3 Bionondo, Manila incident where three passersby were hurt by the toppled electric posts.
She said the joint teams started the inspection in Barangay Pinagbuhatan in response to the directive of Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin ‘Benhur’ Abalos’ Jr. to check and assess the safety of the electric posts, outdoor advertisements other similar installations to assure that remain sturdy even during bad weather conditions.
After the incident, Abalos immediately asked local government units (LGUs) nationwide to conduct routine inspections of the said structures in their respective jurisdictions.
Abalos also ordered BFP-National Capital Region (NCR) Director Chief Supt. Nahum Tarroza to ensure that his subordinates are regularly up on their toes in inspecting safety inspections under their mandate.
Evangelista explained that the joint undertaking is part of the commitment to ensure public safety and reduce the occurrence of accidents related to infrastructure vulnerabilities.
