PH Red Cross underscores importance of public safety, accident insurance
Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard Gordon reiterated the significance of accident insurance and promoting a culture of public safety.
“We all have to prepare for risks,” Gordon said in a statement on Friday, Aug. 11.
Gordon issued this reminder after the PRC deployed an ambulance and cadaver bag for vehicular crash victims in Mandaluyong on Aug. 10 which killed one male pedestrian and injured another.

The Emergency Response Unit of PRC extricated the two pedestrians and helped other rescuers provide urgent pre-hospital treatment and ambulance transport to the injured victim.
The PRC’s Emergency Medical Services, meanwhile, provided a cadaver bag for the deceased victim.
Data from the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) echoed the urgency of Gordon's message to the public on safety and accident insurance. As of Aug. 10, PRC’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has responded to 6,356 incidents, of which 1,343 were involved in various types of vehicle accidents, for a total of 1,246 patients from Jan. 1.
Gordon urged every Filipino to take a step towards preparedness and community service by enrolling in the PRC's Membership Accident Assistance Benefits (MAAB) program.
This initiative falls under the PRC's membership program which protects members through accident insurance coverage in exchange for their volunteer services in both PRC's physical and financial humanitarian activities.
Gordon explained that the MAAB program serves as an initiative that offers members the opportunity to contribute to humanitarian activities while also receiving accident insurance coverage.
Aside from valuable insurance, Gordon said the program also strengthens the PRC's capacity to respond effectively to emergencies aligned with its core mission to extend a helping hand to those in need. (Rhowen Del Rosario)
