A new low-pressure area (LPA) has formed inside the country’s area of responsibility on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 10, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
PAGASA said the LPA was located 235 kilometers east of Borongan City in Eastern Samar as of 3 p.m.
However, weather specialist Ana Clauren-Jorda said the new LPA has a slim chance of developing into a tropical depression and may dissipate in the next few days.
Meanwhile, she said a typhoon, with an international name “Lan,” is not expected to enter the country’s area of responsibility, but it may enhance the southwest monsoon, or “habagat.”
In the next 24 hours, the combined effects of the LPA and southwest monsoon will bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms to Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Albay, Masbate, Visayas, and Mindanao.
PAGASA warned of the possibility of flooding or landslides in these areas due to moderate to occasional heavy rains.
The rest of the country may continue to experience warm weather due to partly cloudy to cloudy skies with a chance of isolated rain showers or thunderstorms possible in the afternoon or evening.
PAGASA advised the public to be cautious of possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, no gale warning is currently raised over any of the country’s seaboards.
PAGASA said small boats and other sea vessels are safe to sail.
