Hontiveros backs additional funding to refurbish BRP Sierra Madre
Senate deputy minority leader Risa Hontiveros said she is ready to support any proposals calling for additional funds to reinforce and refurbish the country’s BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal.

Hontiveros said she would even lobby for it during the upcoming deliberations into the proposed 2024 national budget.
“If the Philippine Navy, Armed Forces of the Philippines were to make a request to reinforce and refurbish our BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal, I will support that request),” Hontiveros said in a statement.
“It’s only right to reinforce the presence of our government and nation there in Ayungin Shoal which is part of our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ),” she further stressed.
She also finds it appropriate to allocate funds to improve the lives of the Philippine Navy Marines who are “literally and figuratively established our Philippine flag in that area.”
“As I said, if the AFP asks for funding to reinforce and refurbish the BRP Sierra Madre on Ayungin Shoal, I would support it and will lobby for it together with our colleagues here in the Senate,” she said.
“We can raise this during the debates on the proposed budget of the DND (Department of National Defense and hopefully, this would breeze through and be approved in the final version of the General Approprations Act (GAA) for 2024,” the lawmaker added.
China earlier claimed that the Philippines had “promised multiple times” to tow away the vessel in Ayungin Shoal.
However, the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea, and even the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) denied there was such any written or even a memory of that commitment from the Philippine government.
Hontiveros agree that this is just a “figment of China’s imagination.”
“So that supposed promise that we made to them to remove the BRP Sierra Madre from Ayungin Shoal, which is within our Exclusive Economic Zone, so that is now in the ranks of their so-called nine-dash line- both and all figments of China's imagination,” Hontiveros stressed.
