"Organizers of the 'Jericho Walk' have called on the people to travel to the city of Borongan in Eastern Samar province on that day to press for an end to mining operations in one country's poorest regions," the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said on Monday, July 31.
The campaign will begin with a caravan from different parishes, converging at the Borongan Capitol grounds.
From there, a march will commence at 9:30 a.m. towards the cathedral.
CBCP added that representatives from the nearby dioceses of Calbayog and Catarman are expected to join the rally, which has also been targeted by mining companies.
Bishop Crispin Varquez of Borongan in Eastern Samar will serve as the main presider during the Mass at the cathedral.
The bishop has been an outspoken advocate against the escalating mining operations in Samar, particularly on the island of Homonhon off Guiuan town.
Caritas Borongan Director Fr. James Abella emphasized that the "Jericho Walk" is a platform "to raise awareness about the negative impacts of mining operations" and an appeal to bring an end to such activities.Â
The director also highlighted that this prayer march is intended to be "peaceful and non-violent" to express concern about the negative impacts of mining operations in Homonhon and Manicani. *(Rhowen Del Rosario)*
