The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday, Aug. 1, warned the public against waterborne diseases, particularly this rainy season.
Other infections such as dengue, leptospirosis, and influenza can also be contracted through exposure to floodwaters.
The health department advised refraining from throwing garbage in undesignated areas to help maintain the cleanliness of the surroundings and prevent mosquitoes and rats from finding places to reproduce.
If walking through flooded streets and other areas is unavoidable, the public must wear boots at all times, according to the DOH.
It also advised the public to boil any water that may be contaminated for a minimum of three minutes.
To stay safe from dengue, DOH reminded people of the "5S Strategy" against the disease carrier: search and destroy breeding sites; use self-protection like insect repellents; seek early consultation; support fogging, spraying, and misting; and maintain hydration.
Aside from these, the department also recommended preparing a Go-Bag with clothes that can protect from mosquitoes in case of evacuation.
Getting vaccinated against the flu is also strongly urged.
