The Philippine men’s volleyball team took down Macau in straight sets, 25-21, 25-15, 25-14, in its debut in the 2023 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup for Men at the Taipei Gymnasium on Sunday, July 9.
Tangled with only two teams in Macau and Mongolia in Pool D, the Filipinos’ debut win was enough to see them through the next round of the tournament’s fourth edition.

National team returnee Marck Espejo joined De La Salle standout Noel Kampton, Lloyd Josafat, Chumason Njigha, Kim Dayadante, Madz Gampong, Ryan Ka, Vince Lorenzo, Vince Mangulabnan, Steven Rotter and Manuel Sumanguid in the lineup. The veteran outside hitter also reunited with Rex Intal, Joshua Umandal and Kim Malabunga, all of whom he played with in the Philippines’ historic silver medal finish in the 30th Southeast Asian Games in 2019. The Philippines and Mongolia battle each other on Monday, July 10 for seeding but both have already qualified for the next round.
