UN chief welcomes strategy to cut emissions from int'l shipping, asks for more action

UNITED NATIONSâ€“ UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday welcomed the adoption of a revised strategy by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, and asked for follow-up measures. Member states of the IMO on Friday agreed in London to reach net-zero emissions from international shipping by or about 2050, as well as checkpoints for 2030 and 2040. "The secretary-general welcomed the adoption and added that the decisions made this week are positive steps forward, but they are just the start," said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for Guterres. The technical and economic policies and regulations needed to deliver on these targets and support a just, equitable transition, including a carbon levy, must be developed and implemented as quickly as possible, said Haq. "Now that governments and industry have a plan, they must urgently respond with the necessary investments in zero-emission vessels and fuels, port infrastructure and workforce upskilling," he told a daily press briefing.
