DAPA, Siargao Islands, Surigao del Norte – This town is hosting the 1st Dapa Siargao National Dragon Boat Regatta 2023 from July 14 to 17, more than two years after the pandemic and six months after super typhoon Odette battered the island.
Department of Tourism-Caraga Director Ivonnie Dumadag cited the event as the first national dragon boat competition to be held in Mindanao and this town, a commercial and trading center on the island.
Dumadag said the event is expected to spur domestic and international travel as part of the recovery efforts of the local government of Dapa following economic setbacks due to the pandemic and Odette in December 2021.
“This international event is expected to forge better partnership with our key tourism stakeholders in our effort to promote emerging tourism products in the region,” she said.
“With 28 confirmed teams of which five are from overseas, the activity is estimated to gather close to 1,000 participants and this will further boost our campaign to attract more international and domestic tourists in the region that will directly contribute in reaching our 2023 target.”
“We are looking forward to make this big event more successful,” Dumadag said.
Surigao del Norte Rep. Francisco Jose “Bingo” Matugas II said the event is symbolic and historic as it is not only about offering food and harvest but it is also for peace and freedom from the pandemic and other calamities that struck this island.
“We hope to elevate this event to higher levels. Since the tourism activity is back, we are now looking forward to the resumption of other activities such as our international surfing and game fishing here in our island.”
Dapa Mayor Elizabeth Matugas said this big event is part of the town’s tourism and economic recovery efforts, since the pandemic lockdowns and the destruction wrought Odette left countless residents badly affected.
Matugas revealed that all home stays and other accommodation facilities here are fully booked.
She said vendors and drivers will earn additional income from the event attended by foreign and domestic tourists and participants.
DOT-13 Senior Tourism Operations Officer Kylee Doreene O. Plaza said all its all systems go for the event. “All systems go, tourism is bouncing back in our region,” she said.
Plaza said the first wave of competition will begin on Saturday morning, July 15, but international and national dragon boat teams who arrive earlier can prepare ahead of schedule.
