Rider dies, back rider hurt in motorcycle-van collision in Mauban, Quezon

MAUBAN, Quezon â€“ A 24-year-old laborer died while his brother was injured when their motorcycle collided with a van in Barangay San Isidro in this town on Friday afternoon, July 7. The Mauban police report identified the fatality as Cedrick Encarnado Villaverde and the injured was Ryan Encarnado Villaverde, 28, both residents of Barangay Soledad here. The van driver was identified as Antonio Baasis, 51, of Tayabas City, Quezon. Around 5:55 p.m., Cedrick was driving his motorcycle with Ryan on the way to the town proper. Upon reaching Barangay San Isidro, their motorcycle collided with a van that got in their lane as it tried to avoid an unidentified man holding a piece of wood that was swatting passersby. CCTV footage showed the unidentified man was apparently under the influence of liquor and chasing all vehicles in the place. The fatality sustained a head injury and died on the spot. The back rider also suffered injuries on his head and broken left leg and was sent to Mauban District Hospital. The van driver is now facing criminal charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, physical injury, and damage to property.
