A tricycle driver who was armed with a gun was killed in a shootout with members of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) in Barangay St. Peter, Quezon City early Thursday morning, July 6.
Lt. Col. Ramil Avenido, QCPD La Loma Station (PS 1) commander, identified the slain tricycle driver as Christian Acebes, 29, of Sampaloc, Manila.
According to the police report, PS 1 operatives, who were manning a checkpoint at the corner of Retiro and Cordillera Streets, noticed Acebes driving his tricycle at full speed at around 12:30 a.m.
They flagged down the suspect’s vehicle, but Acebes ignored them and sped off.
During the chase, the QCPD said Acebes pulled out a gun and fired shots at the pursuing operatives along N.S. Amoranto going to Sto. Domingo, Quezon Avenue.
The police fired back, wounding the suspect who was cornered on Rosarito St. in Barangay 571, Sampaloc, Manila.
Acebes was rushed by operatives to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
Recovered from the crime scene were one .38-caliber revolver loaded with five live bullets, one fired cartridge shell, and the suspect’s tricycle.
“Ginagampanan ng ating kapulisan ang kanilang tungkulin subalit kailangan din nilang protektahan ang kanilang sarili sa anumang kapahamakan kung kaya naman nananawagan kami sa mga suspek na huwag nang magtangkang lumaban pa upang maiwasan ang ganitong insidente (Our police are performing their duty, but they also need to protect themselves from any harm that is why we call on the suspects to try not to fight to avoid this kind of incident),” QCPD director Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III said.
