A survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) revealed that nearly half of Filipinos know almost nothing or nothing at all about the Maharlika Wealth Fund (MWF), also known as the Maharlika Investment Fund. The results of the SWS survey, which was conducted from March 26 to 29, and released on Thursday, July 6, found that 47 percent of Filipinos have “almost no knowledge or no knowledge at all” about the proposed investment fund. Meanwhile, 33 percent have only a “little knowledge” and 20 percent have “at least partial but sufficient knowledge” about the MWF. SWS pointed out that those with partial but sufficient knowledge included 5 percent with extensive knowledge and 15 percent with partial but sufficient knowledge. (PIXABAY)

Knowledge about MWF higher in Metro Manila, Balance Luzon than in VisMin

SWS noted that the percentage of those with at least partial but sufficient knowledge about the MWF was higher in Metro Manila at 29 percent (7 percent extensive and 22 percent partial but sufficient) and Balance Luzon at 24 percent (5 percent extensive and 19 percent partial but sufficient) than in the Visayas at 14 percent (5 percent extensive and 9 percent partial but sufficient) and Mindanao at 10 percent (3 percent extensive and 7 percent partial but sufficient). Meanwhile, those with at least partial but sufficient knowledge about the MWF were higher among those who either graduated from college or took post-graduate studies at 28 percent (5 percent extensive and 23 percent partial but sufficient), those who either had some senior high school, finished senior high school, completed vocational school, or attended some college at 23 percent (5 percent extensive and 18 percent partial but sufficient), and those who either finished junior high school or had some vocational schooling at 24 percent (7 percent extensive and 17 percent partial but sufficient) than among those who either finished elementary or had some high school education at 15 percent (3 percent extensive and 12 percent partial but sufficient) and those who either had no formal education or some elementary education at 9 percent (2 percent extensive and 7 percent partial but sufficient).

Filipinos divided about MWF benefits

During the survey, respondents were also asked how much the MWF will benefit the Philippines if it is developed. Fifty-one percent expect “little or no benefit” from the MWF, consisting of 37 percent “little benefit” and 14 percent “almost no benefit at all.” Meanwhile, 46 percent expect much benefit from it, consisting of 14 percent “very much benefit” and 32 “much benefit.” SWS pointed out that the net expected benefit (percent will benefit very much/much minus percent will benefit a little/not benefit at all, correctly rounded) from the MWF was highest among those with extensive knowledge about it, at +58 (78 percent will benefit very much/much and 20 percent will benefit a little/not benefit at all). It was followed by those with partial but sufficient knowledge, at +47 (74 percent will benefit very much/much and 26 percent will benefit a little/not benefit at all, correctly rounded), those with only a little knowledge, at -13 (43 percent will benefit very much/much and 56 percent will benefit a little/not benefit at all), and those with almost no knowledge or no knowledge at all about it, at -22 (36 percent will benefit very much/much and 59 percent will benefit a little/not benefit at all, correctly rounded).

Opinions split on whether the MWF will end up in corruption

The March 2023 survey also asked the respondents, “How much or little is your confidence that the MWF will not end up in corruption once it is approved by Congress?” Filipinos gave mixed opinions, with 31 percent saying they have much confidence (10 percent very much confidence and 22 percent much confidence, correctly rounded), 38 percent undecided, and 29 percent saying they have little confidence (19 percent somewhat little confidence and 11 percent very little confidence). According to SWS, the net confidence (percent much confidence minus percent little confidence, correctly rounded) that the MWF will not end up in corruption once it is approved by Congress was higher among those with extensive knowledge about it, at +29 (55 percent much confidence and 26 percent little confidence), and those with partial but sufficient knowledge, at +36 (54 percent much confidence and 17 percent little confidence, correctly rounded), than those with only a little knowledge, at -2 (31 percent much confidence and 33 percent little confidence), and those with almost no knowledge or no knowledge at all, at -9 (22 percent much confidence and 31 percent little confidence). The First Quarter 2023 SWS Survey was conducted from March 26 to 29, using face-to-face interviews with 1,200 adults aged 18 and up across the country.
