Newly installed LTO-7 chief vows to run after traffic violators, dealers, operators

Facing the media for the first time since assuming his post last month, Glen Galario said that while road accidents cannot be avoided, the LTO-7 will enforce measures that will “lessen the eventualities of accidents.” "When you say road safety as much as possible, we don't want any casualties from accidents within the roads of Region 7,” said Galario during a press conference on Thursday, July 6. “I know it's very impossible but with the help of the course of LTO and other agencies, we can lessen the eventualities of accidents,” he added. Galario said the region has more than a million motor vehicles and motorcycles running on the roads but only 60 percent are registered and have undergone road safety inspection. He added that roughly 30 to 40 percent of the vehicles are either running the roads without licenses or registrations which might be the leading cause of accidents. Galario cited an incident last week in Lapu-Lapu City where an LTO-7 personnel was hit by a taxi whose driver fell asleep while on the wheel. During the drug test, the taxi driver tested positive for drug use, said Galario. Galario, who replaced Victor Caindec, warned that while he is the chief of LTO-7, there will be zero tolerance against traffic violators. Aside from traffic law violators, the LTO-7 will also run after non-compliant dealers and even operators, Galario said. Galario added that under his term, the LTO-7 will strengthen the campaign against colorum public utility vehicles. “Our operations division is on top of this campaign as we continue to strictly implement this drive to eliminate any kinds of illegal activities present on our roads, especially the colorums. I have instructed them to do random roadside inspections to catch these culprits,” said Galario. Galario said the LTO-7’s law enforcement team is set to implement “Oplan: Isnabero” or the crackdown against picky taxi drivers or those who refuse to render service to passengers. From January to June this year, LTO 7 has apprehended a total of 9,557 violators. Top violators are those who failed to wear the prescribed seatbelt device, defective parts and accessories, and reckless driving.
