Teen hit by stray bullet in Negros village fiesta shooting dies
BACOLOD CITY – A male teenager who was hit by a stray bullet during a fiesta shooting incident in Barangay Alimango, Escalante City, Negros Occidental on July 1 passed away in a private hospital here on Monday, July 3.
Police Major John Ganzon, Escalante police chief, said that Jeban Sayon, 18, suffered complications from a bullet wound in the stomach, according to his family.
Sayon was hit by a stray bullet after 40-year-old Romualdo Abarido of Barangay Washington shot a policeman and another civilian, following a misunderstanding with a local court sheriff.
Master Sgt. Teofesto Aburido, who was detailed to secure the fiesta, responded to the commotion between Abarido and the sheriff.
However, he was shot by Abarido, who was reportedly under the influence of liquor.
Jay-r Garganera, 34, of Toboso town, Negros Occidental, was also hit by a stray bullet in the left ankle, and was about to be discharged from a hospital, according to Ganzon.
Ganzon said that charges for homicide, frustrated homicide, and serious physical injuries have been filed gainst Abarido.
Abarido, who is a member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu), was turned over by the Philippine Army 79th Infantry Battalion (IB) to the police on Saturday night, along with his .45 caliber firearm allegedly used in the incident.
