From the current P11, the boarding fare for the Metro Rail Transit (MRT)-3 would become P13.29 once the petition for fare increase is approved, an official of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.
Assistant Secretary for Railways Jorjette Aquino, concurrent MRT-3 officer-in-charge, said the charge per kilometer would be P1.21 from the current P1 based on the fare adjustment they would refile before the DOTR’s Rail Regulatory Unit (RRU).
The MRT-3 fare adjustment was deferred in April this year based on the order of President Bongbong Marcos amid the high inflation rate and while the country is still recovering from the effects of Covid-19 pandemic.
Just like the Light Rail Transit Line 1 and 2, the last time fare adjustments for MRT-3 was eight years ago.
Last month, DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista announced the approval of fare adjustments for both LRT Line 1 and Line 2, citing the improving economic condition of the country.
He said the fare adjustments are necessary to gather more funds and eventually improve the services of the mass transport system in Metro Manila.
The DOTr’s RRU had previously approved the petitions seeking to increase the train boarding fee by P2.29 with an additional 21 centavos for every kilometer travelled at the LRT-1 and LRT-2.
Next month, the LRT-1 and LRT-2’s minimum boarding fee will be adjusted to P13.29, which is originally P11, and P1.21 per kilometer for every kilometer travelled, which is originally P1 per kilometer.
Bautista had already received the request for authorization of the MRT-3 to file a petition for the adjusted fare rates at around 1 p.m. on Monday, July 3.
