Typhoon-enhanced monsoon rains may continue in some parts of Luzon, Visayas
The southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” which is being enhanced by typhoon Falcon (international name: Khanun) may continue to bring a significant amount of rainfall over parts of Luzon and Visayas in the next three days, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday, July 31.
PAGASA last located the center of the eye of the typhoon 1,020 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon as of 4 p.m.
It is moving north-northwest at 15 kilometers per hour (kph) and continues to strengthen, with maximum sustained winds of 165 kph near the center and gusts of up to 205 kph.
If it maintains its current speed and track, Falcon will be outside the country’s area of responsibility by Tuesday afternoon or evening, Aug. 1, PAGASA said.

However, the typhoon will continue to strengthen the effect of the southwest monsoon, which will bring occasional rains to some parts of the country. In the next 24 hours, PAGASA said “scattered to widespread heavy rains” may persist in Zambales and Bataan. Occasional moderate to heavy monsoon rains may also continue to affect Metro Manila, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, and Occidental Mindoro. Meanwhile, scattered moderate, to at times, heavy rains may prevail over Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Southern Luzon, Western Visayas, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan. “Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in localities that experienced considerable amounts of rainfall for the past several days,” PAGASA warned. On Tuesday, the habagat is also expected to bring gusty conditions to Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Abra, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, the central and southern portions of Aurora, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, and most of Ilocos Region, Southern Luzon, Bicol Region, and Western Visayas. On Wednesday, Aug. 2, gusty conditions caused by the habagat may continue to affect Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Abra, Benguet, Aurora, Zambales, Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Metro Manila, Southern Luzon, the western portion of Northern Samar, and most of Western Visayas.
