Lyceum eyes three-peat in Collegiate Center Championship ML tourney

Published Jul 31, 2023 04:46 am
Ten pioneering schools led by three-peat seeking Lyceum of the Philippines University plunge back to action in Season 3 of the Collegiate Center Championship (CCC) under its mother company Collegiate Center for Esports (CCE). After a long wait and rigid preparations, it’s all systems go for the raring squads in the single-round qualifiers starting on Monday for the third offering of the fastest growing Esports collegiate league backed by Fantech, Converge and Xiaomi. Like in the first two seasons, teams will slug it out in the single-round robin format with only the top eight teams advancing to the playoffs. The bottom two get the boot. From there, the top four squads figure in the upper bracket of the playoffs while the bottom four duke it out in the lower bracket until the Final Four, which will be held live at the SMX Convention Center. The semifinals and grand finals of the prestigious tourney, led by chairman Stanley Lao, president Waiyip Chong, chairman emeritus Peter Cayco, general manager Jay Recto and lead project manager Franz Abrenica, will banner the inaugural Philippine GameDev Expo (PGDX) in Pasay City on Aug. 19 and 20, respectively. The PGDX will be the first-ever game development expo in the Philippines, showcasing the best of the best in the country’s gaming community. As expected, the Pirate Esports have been tagged as the heavy favorites to rule the CCC with back-to-back Season MVP Mark Kenneth “Mark” Delos Reyes and team captain Paul Adrienne “FAE” Huang at the helm. Since defending its title in Season 2 last November, Lyceum embarked on multiple tournaments none bigger than a participation in the Sibol National Team Selection qualifiers for the 32nd Southeast Asian Games Mobile Legends: Bang Bang men’s division in Cambodia. That experience should be enough to prepare the Pirate Esports in a hat-trick bid though their nine other rivals headlined by Season 1 runner-up San Sebastian College-Recoletos and Season 2 second-placer Colegio de San Juan de Letran are out to spoil a looming CCC dynasty. Not to be left behind are Arellano University, Jose Rizal University, Mapua University, College of St. Benilde, Emilio Aguinaldo College, San Beda University, and University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, which to their own have covered all bases for strong contention this season. The CCC Season 3 will kickstart a string of major tournaments in line for CCE, including the inaugural 16-team Philippine Collegiate Championships (PCC), sponsored by Xiaomi with Playdex as its official community platform. The PCC will set the stage for the four best squads each from the National Capital Region (NCR), Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao after a series of qualifying tournaments featuring more than 2000 schools.
